Antivirus software varies, the only constant factor of that kind of software is how much of a beating it's going to take. No antivirus software is perfect, as virus producers around the world are trying constantly to improve the effectiveness of their malicious software. Anytime antivirus software is offered, it's a gamble. It may not do anything, or it might only it may not be as much as half as effective as software you would have to subscribe to or otherwise buy. Generally, the "best" antivirus software is the software you have to buy. If you download free software then remember....it's always a gamble, as is the software's effectiveness.
To protect your computer with just one free anti virus program is a bit risky. The free programs are not too bad, but trust them completely ?

Sorry' But there is no such thing as a "best free" when it comes to AV products. For the most part you get what you pay for. Free ones will let you down. Right now the worst free AV's are Trend micro AVG' and Avast. The worst two paid are Norton & McAfee. Right now the best out there free is Avira from what i have read on other security forums. The best paid would be Kaspersky products like Defender Pro. But Kaspersky beats them all when it comes to protection 97% and Detection 98%. I have used all the free ones at one time or the other and found them lacking. I had 182 trojans on my machine one time when i had AVGfree best antivirus download. It didn't even detect them until the damage was already done. My machine crashed. There went another 125 bucks for a reload of the OS. I got tired of it. I bought Defender Pro powered by Kaspersky almost a year ago and it has been the best i ever had. I will never have another free AV on my machine. For the most part you get what you pay for.
i really think that the very best are probably pay programs.there some good free ones however.if you can afford it nod32 is awesome.very good.if you want free then i really recommend avast4.8 free.its great for a free program.avg has a ton of fans.i used to have it but switched to avast and never looked back.avast isn't quite as good as nod32 or kapersky but will work well if you have a multi-layered approach to security.
I use AVG Free, you don't have to do anything but install it.
